Grand Chord of the Indian Railways is :

In two parts –
1. Howrah – Gaya – Delhi line and
2. Howrah – Allahabad – Mumbai line

  • Links Sitarampur and Pandeet Deen Dayal Upadhyayay Junction, Stretch of 450 km.
  • Fully electrified and triple line from Mughalsarai to Dehri.
  • Double line from Dehri to Asansol.
  • Lifeline of the country.
  • Up Direction – Movement of coal and Steel from eastern to northern sections of the country.
  • Down Direction – Movement of food grains, fertilizers, and empty wagons.
Area – It includes the Chota Nagpur Plateau and the fertile Gangetic Plains of Bihar.
  • Calcutta – Delhi route became operational in 1866.
  • To handle the increasing traffic Grand Chord was planned.
  • Grand Chord opened by Lord Minto in 1906 who was the Viceroy and Governor General of India.
  • Construction cost – 415 Lacs which is equivalent to ₹12 billion or US$150 million in 2020.

Major Trains on this route :

3 Rajdhani from Bhubaneshwar, Ranchi and Howrah
Freight traffic particularly coal handled by Dhanbad division.
