Anti Lock Braking System

According to government regulations new bikes launched on/after April 1st 2018 above 125 cc must be equipped with Anti Lock Braking System or ABS . Many people are pondering about this ABS as to what it is. In the following article we are going to discuss upon various questions like:

1. What is ABS?

2. How ABS works?

3. Advantages

Let us start with the first question:

What is ABS?

ABS is a technology which prevents the wheels to get locked up while driving. ‘Locked up’ means the wheels of the vehicle to get completely stopped. When the wheels of an automobile or a bike gets locked up the tyres starts skidding over the surface which can also be called drifting. In some cases the vehicle gets completely out of the control of the driver and may result in fatal accidents. ABS is a technique which prevents this sudden lock, hence protecting the driver as well as the vehicle.

How ABS works?

There are two types of velocities in a vehicle:

rotational velocity (of the wheel)

translational velocity (of the vehicle)

These two velocities need to be equal for perfect turn with braking. If the translational velocity is more then the vehicle starts to skid on the surface. ABS improves the braking by a technique called intermediate braking. Optimal amount of braking force is transmitted to the wheels through electronic braking distribution.

Speed sensors are attached to the wheels. When the speed of the vehicle starts to reduce the brake shoe starts to open up which reduces the speed more efficiently. When the brake lever is pressed to full force only threshold braking force is transmitted to the wheels so that the wheels do not slip. The braking force is distributed and applied intermediately.

Advantages :

  • ABS reduces braking distance.
  • Prevents skidding.
  • Prevents vehicle from spinning on friction less surface.
